WHY RECYCLE?

The concept of recycling is simple: It turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources and produces long-term benefits. The combined waste reduction efforts of municipalities and its citizens can make a difference in conserving and protecting our environment.

* Recycling reduces waste and the need for landfilling which, in turn, extends the useful life of the landfill.

* Recycling decreases the need to extract and process virgin raw materials that are used in manufacturing processes for the new projects, thereby conserving natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals.

* Recycling saves energy and reduces pollution associated with raw material and mineral extraction and processing.

* Recycling helps sustain the environment and natural ecosystem for future generations.

  • recycling containers at city offices and apartment complexes
  • Christmas tree collections
  • Fort Hood recycles
  • Organize a recycling program at your business or place of employment

If you have items that are still useable but you don't want them any more, you can either donate them to one of the many help centers and shelters in the city, or you can participate in Killeen Freecycle, a concept to reduce landfill and share with other members of the community that may put these items to good use.

HHW Collection Events

Special Collection events are held periodically in Bell, Coryell and Lampasas counties to provide citizens a means to properly dispose of Household Hazardous Waste materials. HHW is comprised of a wide variety of flammable, toxic, corrosive, or poisonous materials. HHW collection events convenient to Killeen area citizens are publicized on this website and in the Killeen Daily Herald newspaper.

Christmas trees

Christmas Tree collection events are usually held the first, sometimes second Saturday after New Years Day. Announcements will be made on this website, the City of Killeen cable channel (10), and in the Killeen Daily Herald.

Compact Fluorescents

Used Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) are accepted by Home Depot for proper recycling.

CFLs are accepted at the periodic Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events.
